Refrigerator Not Cooling: What to Check First

Before calling for service, check these common causes of refrigerator cooling problems that you may be able to fix yourself.

Quick Checks Before Calling

If your refrigerator is not cooling properly, try these steps first:

1. Temperature Settings

  • Check that the thermostat was not accidentally adjusted
  • Recommended settings: Refrigerator 37-40F, Freezer 0F
  • Some models have unusual control layouts

  • 2. Power Supply

  • Is the light on when you open the door?
  • Check if the outlet has power (plug in something else)
  • Check the circuit breaker
  • Look for a tripped GFCI outlet nearby

  • 3. Condenser Coils

  • Dusty coils reduce efficiency dramatically
  • Located behind front grille (bottom) on most Sub-Zero units
  • Clean with vacuum and brush

  • 4. Door Seals

  • Inspect for cracks, tears, or gaps
  • Clean seals with mild soap and water
  • Test: Close door on paper; it should resist pulling out

  • 5. Air Circulation

  • Do not overfill the refrigerator
  • Allow space between items
  • Do not block air vents inside the unit

  • 6. Clearance

  • Ensure adequate space around the unit
  • Built-ins need proper ventilation
  • Check that vents are not blocked
