Old rooms, new dimensions
Triple-decker kitchens are at the back, off a rear stair, and are rarely square. A modern integrated unit needs a level opening and a defined air path; an out-of-plumb wall gives it neither. The unit gets shimmed into place and the door is adjusted to match, and everything is fine until the seal has to work harder than it was designed to. On these calls a level on the cabinet and a paper test around the gasket come before any instrument does.
The rear stair
Access is the back stairway more often than the front door, and back stairs in these houses are narrow, turned and sometimes enclosed. It is the reason a job that needs the appliance out is quoted with that in it rather than discovered on the day.

Ours backs onto an exterior wall on the hill side and it simply could not keep up in the cold snap. He found the condenser fan turning at half speed and the coil furred over. Both put right that morning.
