Have this to hand

Four things that shorten the call

  • Model and serial

Inside the fresh-food compartment on most columns; behind the base grille on under-counter and drawer units.

  • What changed and when

A slow drift over a fortnight and an overnight failure point at different parts of the same appliance.

  • Any code on the display

Exactly as written, including whether it is flashing. A code narrows the visit down considerably.

  • How it is installed

Panel-ready in a run of cabinetry, under a counter, or freestanding — it decides what has to come out first.

Cost

Quoted in full before anything is opened

Flat $95 service call covering the visit and full diagnosis, credited against the repair once you approve it. The bands below are where most repairs land once the fault is known.

  • Door gasket or seal replacement $290–$760
  • Evaporator or condenser fan motor $320–$650
  • Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor $280–$680
  • Ice maker, water valve or supply line $300–$700
  • Electronic control board $480–$920
  • Compressor or sealed-system repair $1,000–$2,330
Worth repairing? A comparable new unit runs $8,270 to $19,510

A comparable built-in refrigerator, appliance only — before delivery, installation, custom panels or cabinetry work. Undercounter and wine units sit below this band; a column replacement is usually two purchases rather than one.

What moves a job inside its band

  • Which circuit failed

A door seal, a fan motor, a defrost heater and a sealed system sit at very different points on the same range. What failed decides most of the figure before anything else does.

  • Whether the part is still made

A current platform part arrives in days. A superseded board or a discontinued evaporator means a supersession lookup and a longer wait, and that shows up in the quote honestly.

  • What it takes to reach it

A hillside house with the unit backed onto an exterior wall, or a column boxed in by a stone counter, is more work to open than a unit that rolls forward. Access is quoted, not discovered.

  • One trip or two

If the part is on the van it finishes that day. If not, the return is inside the quoted figure rather than added to it afterwards.

Island machine in a condo kitchen was leaking into the cabinet below and we only noticed when the floor swelled. The drain pump outlet hose had split right at the barb. Replaced, the base dried and sealed, and he checked the neighbouring cabinet too.

Ours backs onto an exterior wall on the hill side and it simply could not keep up in the cold snap. He found the condenser fan turning at half speed and the coil furred over. Both put right that morning.

Our kitchen sits at the back of the house down a narrow hall, so the unit had to come out on a dolly with the trim off. The control board had cooked itself. He laid out repair against replacement with real reasoning behind each, and never pushed the expensive one.
