Sub-Zero Ice Maker Repair

Clear-ice makers in kitchen islands and back bars, plus the ice modules built into the freezer side of a column. Low or absent production usually traces back to the water supply, the fill valve, or a harvest cycle that has stopped completing.

Flat $95 service call — the trip and the diagnosis — credited against the repair if you approve one.

The complaint

How it gets described

  • Production dropping to a handful of cubes a day
  • Fill tube frozen shut
  • Ice maker arm stuck in the raised position
  • Cubes coming out small, hollow or misshapen

The visit

What gets read

  • Supply pressure at the fill valve, and the volume delivered per cycle
  • Fill tube and inlet for ice, filter condition and age
  • Harvest cycle watched from start to finish, not inferred
  • Compartment temperature, because a warm freezer cannot complete a harvest

Cost

Quoted in full before anything is opened

Flat $95 service call covering the visit and full diagnosis, credited against the repair once you approve it. The bands below are where most repairs land once the fault is known.

  • Door gasket or seal replacement $290–$760
  • Evaporator or condenser fan motor $320–$650
  • Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor $280–$680
  • Ice maker, water valve or supply line $300–$700
  • Electronic control board $480–$920
  • Compressor or sealed-system repair $1,000–$2,330
Worth repairing? A comparable new unit runs $8,270 to $19,510

A comparable built-in refrigerator, appliance only — before delivery, installation, custom panels or cabinetry work. Undercounter and wine units sit below this band; a column replacement is usually two purchases rather than one.

What moves a job inside its band

  • Which circuit failed

A door seal, a fan motor, a defrost heater and a sealed system sit at very different points on the same range. What failed decides most of the figure before anything else does.

  • Whether the part is still made

A current platform part arrives in days. A superseded board or a discontinued evaporator means a supersession lookup and a longer wait, and that shows up in the quote honestly.

  • What it takes to reach it

A hillside house with the unit backed onto an exterior wall, or a column boxed in by a stone counter, is more work to open than a unit that rolls forward. Access is quoted, not discovered.

  • One trip or two

If the part is on the van it finishes that day. If not, the return is inside the quoted figure rather than added to it afterwards.

Two questions

Before you pick up the phone

Production dropped to a handful of cubes a day.

A slow decline rather than a clean stop usually means restriction rather than failure: a filter near the end of its life, a partly frozen fill tube, or a compartment sitting a degree or two warm so each harvest takes longer. All three are cheap to rule out first.

The arm is stuck in the raised position.

The raised arm is the maker telling you it thinks the bin is full. Either the bin really is packed at the back where you cannot see, or the arm linkage is jammed or the switch behind it has failed. Worth clearing the bin fully before calling — it resolves a fair number of these.

Production had dropped to a handful of cubes a day. The inlet screen was choked with sediment after work on the street main. Cleaned out, filter changed, and we had full bins again inside a day.

Cubes came out small and misshapen after a storm took our power down for most of a day. The control had lost its settings and was filling short. Reset and recalibrated, no parts, and he told me so.

Fill tube frozen shut for the second winter running. Instead of blaming the house temperature he tested the mould heater, found it weak, and replaced it. The fault has not come back at all.
