Doors and hinge cams come first

The door on a Viking built-in is heavy and its hinge lifts it slightly through the swing. As the cam wears, the lift is lost and the door settles low. Long before anyone notices the alignment, the gasket has stopped sealing at the bottom of the hinge side. Warm, moist room air enters there continuously, finds the evaporator, and freezes on it. The customer reports poor cooling; the cause is a worn hinge and a two-dollar gap.

Then airflow: fan, then defrost

The fresh-food compartment on a built-in of this design is cooled by air moved from the freezer side. An evaporator fan that has slowed or stopped therefore produces a warm refrigerator and a perfectly cold freezer — a very characteristic split, and one that a failed defrost circuit produces too, because ice on the evaporator blocks the same airflow. Separating them is a matter of looking at the evaporator, not of interpretation.

Sealed system, last and rarely

Compressors, start components and refrigerant faults exist and they are not where a competent diagnosis begins. A start relay or capacitor failure — a unit that clicks and stops, or runs briefly and cuts out — mimics a dead compressor closely enough that guessing is expensive. Everything upstream is eliminated first.

• Condenser cleaned and inspected before any pressure conclusion is drawn
• Compartment temperatures logged against setpoint over a full cycle
• Evaporator examined directly for frost pattern
• Door seal tested at every point around the frame
