The control believes its sensors
Temperature on these columns is measured by thermistors whose resistance changes with temperature, and every decision the board makes rests on those readings. When a thermistor drifts, the appliance is not malfunctioning — it is behaving correctly on wrong information. That produces the confusing cases: a compartment that over-cools while the display insists it is at set point, or a unit that will not call for cooling while a thermometer inside says otherwise. An independent temperature reading is therefore the first instrument out of the bag.
Doors, panels and the alignment they need
Column doors carry a furniture panel and are designed to be adjusted precisely in three planes. That adjustability is a real advantage, and it also means a door can be out of adjustment rather than broken. A seal that touches at the top and gapes at the bottom is the ordinary result, and it is the ordinary cause of a warm corner and a frosting evaporator.
Ice and water
On the freezer columns the ice maker and its fill valve are the components most often at issue, and the filter is upstream of both. A filter well past its interval restricts flow enough to shorten every fill, which produces undersized, hollow cubes long before it produces no ice at all.
