Thermador Refrigeration Error Codes: How to Read Them

What the code identifies

The great majority of refrigeration codes on these appliances fall into a few families. Sensor codes say a temperature probe is reading open, shorted or implausible. Fan codes say a motor is not returning the speed feedback the board asked for. Door codes say a door has been open longer than the control tolerates. Defrost codes say a defrost cycle did not terminate the way it should have. Communication codes say two boards are not talking. In every case the code names the circuit, not the component in it.

Why that distinction is not pedantry

A sensor code has three possible causes and only one of them is the sensor: the probe itself, the harness or connector between the probe and the board, or the board input reading it. Replacing the probe on the strength of the code resolves perhaps two cases in three and leaves the third exactly where it started, with the part paid for. Any competent diagnosis of a coded fault separates those three with a meter.

What to do when a code appears

• Write it down exactly as displayed, including whether it is steady or flashing — codes are frequently lost when power is cycled
• Put a thermometer in the compartment and note what it actually reads against the set point
• Note whether anything changed recently — a power cut, a filter change, a door left open, a heatwave
• Only then cycle the power, because a code that clears and stays clear after a genuine one-off event is not a fault

And the honest caveat

Code tables vary by model and by production year, and a table found online for a different column will confidently tell you the wrong thing. The model and serial number decide which table applies. That is why the number on the plate inside the compartment is asked for on every call.
