Island units are the awkward ones — they draw and reject air through a single toe-kick grille, and a rug pushed against it in winter is enough to raise the compartment several degrees. It is worth ruling out before anything else.

In the oldest houses the constraint is the doorway, not the kitchen. Where a unit will not come out through the room it went into, a repair carried out in place is the difference between a morning and a project, and the diagnosis is arranged around that fact from the start.
