Refrigerator Door Gasket Care and Maintenance

Proper door gasket maintenance ensures efficient cooling and prevents costly repairs.

Why Gaskets Matter

Door gaskets (seals) keep cold air in and warm air out. Damaged or dirty gaskets:

  • Increase energy consumption
  • Cause temperature fluctuations
  • Lead to frost buildup
  • Make the compressor work overtime

  • Monthly Inspection

    Visual Check:

  • Look for cracks, tears, or gaps
  • Check for mold or mildew (appears as black spots)
  • Inspect the entire perimeter of each door

  • Seal Test:

  • Close the door on a dollar bill
  • Try to pull the bill out
  • It should resist with slight friction
  • Repeat at several points around the door

  • Cleaning Gaskets

    Supplies:

  • Mild dish soap
  • Warm water
  • Soft cloth
  • Old toothbrush for crevices

  • Steps:

  • Mix soap with warm water
  • Wipe down the entire gasket
  • Use toothbrush for folded areas and corners
  • Rinse with clean, damp cloth
  • Dry thoroughly

  • Avoid:

  • Bleach or harsh chemicals (damages rubber)
  • Abrasive scrubbers
  • Excessive water that could seep into the door

  • Keeping Gaskets Supple

After cleaning, apply a thin layer of:

  • Petroleum jelly
  • Silicone lubricant (food-grade)

  • This keeps the rubber supple and maintains the seal.

    When to Replace

    Consider gasket replacement if:

  • Cleaning does not remove black mold
  • Cracks or tears are present
  • The seal test fails consistently
  • Visible warping or deformation

  • Our technicians can replace gaskets during a service visit.
