Why Gaskets Matter

Monthly Inspection

Visual Check:

Look for cracks, tears, or gaps

Check for mold or mildew (appears as black spots)

Inspect the entire perimeter of each door

Seal Test:

Close the door on a dollar bill

Try to pull the bill out

It should resist with slight friction

Repeat at several points around the door

Cleaning Gaskets

Supplies:

Mild dish soap

Warm water

Soft cloth

Old toothbrush for crevices

Steps:

Mix soap with warm water

Wipe down the entire gasket

Use toothbrush for folded areas and corners

Rinse with clean, damp cloth

Dry thoroughly

Avoid:

Bleach or harsh chemicals (damages rubber)

Abrasive scrubbers

Excessive water that could seep into the door

Keeping Gaskets Supple

After cleaning, apply a thin layer of:

Petroleum jelly

Silicone lubricant (food-grade)

This keeps the rubber supple and maintains the seal.

When to Replace

Consider gasket replacement if:

Cleaning does not remove black mold

Cracks or tears are present

The seal test fails consistently

Visible warping or deformation
