Match the noise to the moment

• A rising and falling whirr that tracks with cooling demand — the evaporator or condenser fan running at variable speed. Normal, unless it has become louder than it used to be.
• A rattle or scraping that appears for a few minutes and then clears — a fan blade touching frost. That means ice where there should not be any, and the frost is the fault, not the fan.
• A steady low hum felt through the cabinetry more than heard — compressor isolation mounts that have hardened with age, transmitting vibration into the joinery.
• A single knock or hammer when the ice maker fills — the water valve closing sharply against the supply. Sometimes cured at the shut-off, sometimes a valve.
• Clicks a few seconds apart with no cooling following — a compressor start component trying and failing. This one is not cosmetic and is worth acting on.

Why the timing matters more than the sound

Two very different faults make similar noises, and the cycle tells them apart. A fan touching ice is noisy shortly after a defrost and quiet later; a fan with a failing bearing is noisy whenever it runs and gets worse with load. Noting when the sound happens — after the door has been open, in the small hours, only in warm weather — is genuinely more useful than trying to describe the sound itself.

What is safe to check yourself

Whether the cabinet is level and not touching the cabinetry on one side, whether anything is resting on top of the unit, and whether the plinth grille is clear. All three transmit or create noise and none requires tools. Beyond that, an integrated Miele column is not an appliance to be pulled out of its opening casually — the panel weight and the hinge adjustment both make that a job worth doing properly.
