Bad Ice From a Sub-Zero Built-In in Winchester: A Diagnosis by Symptom
Poor ice from a Sub-Zero built-in is usually a flow problem, and a saturated filter chokes flow long before it changes the taste. Read the shape of the cubes, follow the supply back, then face the filter interval nobody wrote down.
The bin already contains the diagnosis
You can narrow this down in thirty seconds without opening a panel. Cubes that are dished or shelled tell you the mould received less water than the cycle called for. Milky cubes are air and mineral content coming out of solution as they harden. Cubes welded together are about release and turnover. Cubes that are simply undersized, but sound and clear, are a separate signal from all three.
Sort what is in the bin into those four piles before you decide anything. Most bins hold a mixture, and the mixture is informative: shells on top of clear, well-formed cubes means the change is recent, and something upstream shifted in the last day or two. A bin that is uniformly poor from bottom to top means it has been drifting for months and nobody looked.
Winchester gives us a lot of the second kind. A built-in that went into a Winchester Center kitchen during a renovation, or into a compact rear ell off a two-family in Arlington, tends to be plumbed once and then forgotten, because there is nothing to trip over and nothing to hear. Ice does not fail loudly. It gets a little worse each quarter until somebody has guests and notices they are serving shells.
The water side, checked before the machine
Everything the appliance can do is limited by what arrives at the inlet, so trace the path from the household supply forward before blaming a component. Three things account for most of it: a stop valve never fully reopened, an old piercing fitting that has silted almost shut, and a supply tube crushed against the back of the cabinet when the unit was last pushed home.
The valve is worth finding physically rather than assuming. In the tight grid around the Aberjona, kitchens sit at the back of the house down a hallway, and the feed is often taken from a basement run and brought up through a floor, with the stop on the joist rather than under the sink. Half-open reads as fine to anyone glancing at it.
The tube is the one that punishes short clearance. Symmes Corner Capes and split-levels frequently hold an under-counter unit in a run built for something shallower, and the last few inches of copper or braid take the strain each time the appliance goes back into its opening. A kink that would be obvious in daylight is invisible behind a panelled door.
If the fill sound has changed, that counts as evidence. A cycle that used to run a couple of seconds longer, or one that has become noticeably quieter, is telling you about flow before the bin does.
Past the point of checking it yourself?
The filter, and the interval that lapsed
Here is the part that gets missed: a cartridge chokes flow long before it does anything to the taste, so the household has no cue at all. Water still tastes clean, the dispenser still runs, and the only thing quietly starving is the fill on the ice side, which is the smallest and most flow-sensitive draw in the appliance.
That is why “we would have noticed” is not a defence. Nobody notices. The honest question is when the cartridge was last replaced, and in most Woburn and Winchester kitchens the honest answer is that it went in with the renovation and has not been touched since.
Two complications are worth naming. First, a replacement cartridge from a third party may be dimensionally identical and still pass less water at the same pressure, so a swap that seemed like a saving can show up weeks later in the bin. Second, bypass. Fitting the bypass plug and running for a day is a real test, but read it carefully: recovery means the cartridge was the restriction; no change means the restriction is further along, and the appliance is not thereby cleared.

Freeze time, cabinet temperature and door habits
The set point on the display describes the compartment as a whole. What governs cube quality is the air temperature at the mould, and those two can disagree badly while the display shows nothing wrong at all.
Airflow is usually why. A compartment loaded to its vents, or a bin buried behind stacked packages, starves the mould of the cold air that sets the freeze time. Clearing the vents and giving the assembly room to breathe costs nothing and frequently restores a full cube within a day or two.
Then there is how the house uses the appliance, which we mention because it is real, not to shift blame. Every door opening admits warm air that has to be removed again before the cycle recovers. A kitchen that hosts back-to-back on a weekend will produce visibly poorer ice by Sunday than the same kitchen produced on Wednesday, and the rated output is stated across a full day precisely because the hour-to-hour figure is meaningless.
Harvest: making ice and letting go of it
Harvest is the second half of the cycle, and it is worth knowing the word. After the freeze, the mould is warmed just enough to release its grip, and the cubes are swept into the bin. Filling and freezing is one job; letting go is another, and a machine can be perfectly good at the first while failing the second.
That distinction explains slabs. Cubes bonded into a mass point at harvest timing or at a bin that never empties, rather than at a shortage of cold. Ice left standing loses surface moisture and re-freezes to its neighbours; the block that results is a storage story, not a capacity story.
Observation is the limit of the useful DIY here. Watch a cycle: does the sweep move and complete, does the sensing arm drop back to rest, is there an audible fill? Note what happens and stop there. Handing it over
Some symptoms should not wait behind a cartridge change. Water on the floor, a damp fitting on the supply, or a compartment that is drifting off its temperature are all reasons to pick up the phone straight away, because none of them improve with patience and one of them ruins a floor.
